1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
This book is all about marketing and how you do it. It shows
the misconceptions of marketing and tells people to be remarkable to be
remembering. The book wants people to compete with a niche rather than the
world.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and
enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I really enjoyed this book because of the small marketing
company I interned for. As I did know a lot about marketing, this book gave me
insight into secrets about marketing. I believe when running any small business
that marketing is the key. There are a lot of similar businesses with similar
quality products, but what makes one company sell products way more is the
marketing. How much people see this product, as well as how remarkable it is,
is what leads to benefits and conversions of sales.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on
the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise that involves marketing and
entrepreneurship. I would begin by explaining the importance of marketing and
then go into an exercise that involves Google’s “Alexa,” which shows ranking of
websites based on how often it is viewed. I would have the class right down
what they think is their most viewed website and then research how this website
became so heavily viewed. My exercise would involve SEO (search engine optimization).
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when
reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from
your expectations?
In the first chapter I was surprised right away when I
learned that advertising is dying. Humans are now using search engines, blogs,
and social media to find the best product comparison to others. It also showed
stats of Obama on social media and the connections he had with social media.
Obamas stats were way higher than his competitors when running for President
showing that social media really does have a huge effect on where people put
their vote and their purchases.
Hi Amanda! Wow, the book you read about marketing sounds interesting. I really like your idea for the class activity! After you mentioned it, I was wondering which websites get viewed the most, and my guess would be Google’s homepage. It was cool how the book related back to your internship experience, I find myself relating a lot of this course back to internships and work experience I have had so it is nice to see someone doing that as well. I’m not surprised that advertising is dying because as you said it is much more popular for people to search and compare products then it is for them to just look at ads and marketing material for decision making.
ReplyDeleteHey Amanda,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a good informative book. Marketing is so important for every business, especially for competitive advantage. The exercise you created for the class sounds like a great learning experience that’ll keep students involved. I was unaware about advertising dying till you mentioned it. Now that you mention it, I do compared products by looking up each product and comparing them to one another. Technology seems to be taking over everything now which is a little scary.
Overall, good reflection!
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI liked your "aha" moment! I didn't read the same book as you, but social media is a big important factor in our society now. I know I go by friend's recommendations or people on social media that I trust. I even search Buzzfeed for reviews on products if I need to do that. I didn't realize that advertising is dying until you mentioned it, but I can understand why it is as well. I think advertising may be transforming, possibly not dying. Nice review!
