In my life I have been exposed to entrepreneurship various
times. With my dad creating his own construction business and his own stand up
kayak pontoon system (StandNfish), I have seen it all first hand. When I
started noticing my love for entrepreneurship, I was very young. My family
would always tell me that I had an entrepreneurial mind and I agreed. I started
with many small businesses as a little kid and always found ways to make money.
The most time I spent on a business was my “Duct Tape” business. I created and
sold personally designed wallets, bookmarks, cup holders, belts, and lunch
boxes. I got very involved with it and started making duct tape shows, but
those were just for myself to wear. Everyone knew me for my duct tape and
everyone wanted to buy something from me. It was this moment at the age of
about 12 that I realized I loved being entrepreneurial. I loved being in charge
of my business and improving it day by day. From the use of Velcro, knives, and
cutting boards, I loved it all.
My reason for taking this class is because of an internship I
did this summer. I worked for two twin brothers, The Grattons, and they have
tried about every business and invention out there. Their latest invention is
the JellyTank, which holds moon jellyfish in a 5-gallon desktop aquarium. They
pre-sold over $188,000 and I got to witness everything about it. I learned every
step of the way. From their design phase, their testing phase, their
kick-starter campaign, and their final creation, I knew that I wanted to do
something just like this. I want to achieve a minor in entrepreneurship so that
I can learn more and have the skills to do something as great as the men I
interned for. I hope to achieve skills that will make me a successful entrepreneur.

ReplyDeleteHi Amanda,
Wow! I really enjoyed reading your entrepreneurship story! I also have an entrepreneurial dad so that is a similarity between the two of us. As a kid I also had a small “business” making decorative pillows and selling them to family and friends. It is great to see someone with such a relatable story. Your experience with the Gratton brothers is so unique and must’ve been a wonderful learning experience. I look forward to getting to know you this semester!
Hi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteWow, my parents also had an influence on me with the business they started and sustained. It’s really easy to become hooked at a young age, especially when a business of yours takes off. That internship sounds so amazing; I can’t imagine how fun the learning experience was, especially when your own passion for entrepreneurship is so pronounced. I wish you all the best on your journey and I look forward to reading more of your experiences!
